City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
Release Date: March 27th 2007
Source: Purchased
Format: Paperback and now Hardcover
Pages: 585
Buy it: Amazon|B&N|Book Depository
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

I first read City of Bones in January of last year and it helped propel me into book collecting. Before that book my shelves were home to my old Webkinz and snow globes and other shit like that. After I read the first Mortal Instruments book, I had to buy the box set. I rushed to the local Barnes and Nobel–which happens to be 5 minutes away from my house– and returned the first book in replacement for the box set of 4: City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass and City of Fallen Angles. Those where the first books to adorn my shelves (Link here to see the evolution go my shelves). This series changed my life forever.
Needless to say I loved this book. I read it in two days which is probably the fastest I have ever read a 500 page book. I could not put it down for a second. The story was fast paced and action packed, not to mention my love for most of the characters. I just looked back on my GoodReads (follow my reviews and see what I am reading)  to see my first initial review of the book and here is what it was:
City of Bones was an interesting story. Some of the characters were annoying (Clary/Simon) but the story line is pretty good. I got sick of the vampires and werewolves when ever they popped up and was more interested with the demons/foresakens and others of the sort. Jace I think is an amazing character and not like the usual male protagonist. He was extremely funny. I found myself laughing out loud multiple times where usually it's the best friend/sidekick that is the funny one. Overall it was an enjoyable quick read.
This review still stands true. Jace is one of my favorite characters because of his sarcastic tone and sense of humor. I have always said that a man must have a sense of humor before I look at anything else which is why when everyone else is looking at William Herondale, I still have my eyes on Jace. Thankfully Jace is still fucking beautiful. And I do find Simon and Clary to be a bit annoying in the beginning. Just so simple and mundane, but as the books progressed, I fell in love with both of them and specifically Simon. I felt the story was so similar to Twilight in the sense of vampires and werewolves, but yet so different because it talked about these demons and shadowhunters.
City of Bones follows our main character Clary Fray whose live is turned upside down when she tries to stop what she thinks is a random knife attack in an underage club. But when the bouncer is called and no one can see the three but her, Clary starts to wonder what exactly is going on. When Clary receives a worrying and strange phone call from her mother she rushed home to find a demon waiting to devour her. Still being just a normal teen, Clary can barley hold her own. It is only when Jace, one of the knife wielding teens from the club, comes and saves her does she truly receive an explanation.
As Clary regains her "sight," she beings to see the world as it truly exists  The three teens in the club are actually shadowhunters: men, women and teens created by mixing the blood of angels with the blood of humans so that they could protect the mundanes from the dangers of demons.
I love all the books in the Mortal Instruments series. I love how everything fits together so perfectly from the mythology to the romance. We are allowed to see Clary discover this world as we do and her reactions to the new adventures that her sight give her. The character development is not just restricted to Clary but also extends to love interests and supporting characters such as Jace who appears to be another typical tragic YA hero, but I enjoyed the way he was characterised in this as he transforms behind the mask of annoyingly arrogant teen and. Magnus Bane is one of my favorite characters because he is so demential. There is so much mystery behind him, but yet you see his vulnerable side. Isabella Lightwood is literally my goal in life. If I had to choose one weapon it would be her whip that wraps around her wrist. It is so fashionable and just so deadly. I would love to be fashionable and sexy yet feared by all.
I love the Mortal Instruments Series and it is by far one of my favorite series next to Harry Potter and the Raven Cycle. 5 out of 5 stars forever and always

And as of September 2015, City of Bones is changing it's style. Here is a sneak peek of the new covers come later on this year!
