In a kingdom by the sea…

In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word.

parabatai is your partner in battle. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other—but they can never fall in love.

Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter, and the best in her generation. She lives for battle. Shoulder to shoulder with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries—the most powerful of supernatural creatures—teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries turn up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge—and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held prisoner by the faerie Courts. All Emma, Mark, and Julian have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them.

Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter Law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents—and can she bear to know the truth?

The darkly magical world of Shadowhunters has captured the imaginations of millions of readers across the globe. Join the adventure in Lady Midnight, the long-awaited first volume of a new trilogy from Cassandra Clare

So I decided to reread Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows in anticipation of Queen of Air and Darkness so expect reviews for those coming as well. If you not have read any of Cassandra Clare's books yet I would say 1. WTF are you doing with your life? 2. Please do not jump into Lady Midnight without reading all of The Mortal Instruments and the Infernal Devices. You would not only be spoiling the other series for yourself but you would additionally not understand anything you are reading.

That being said, this is a great beginning to a wonderful trilogy of books. If you love Cassandra Clare's novels and have not picked up this one I do not see why you have not. With these books we just get to see more of the characters we love and more of the beautiful Shadowhunter World that I fell in love with in high school when I first started reading them. My favorite part of Cassandra Clare's novels are the depth of characters she creates and in this series we see so many old and new faces, each more interesting than the next. I also am a fan of the diversity of the cast from people of color to the representation of the LGBTQ+ community I feel as though everyone is represented in these books.

This story had such range between action, suspense, romance and magic, the plot was keeping me guessing from page one. The one complaint I have is that for a novel that was 688 pages, not all 688 pages were that thrilling to me. There were some parts that were slow and seemed to drag. It was not until half way through the book did I really fall deeply into this story. The pacing was a little off, but not the less this story was very enjoyable. I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars!
If you have not read Lady Midnight please do not read any further! There are spoilers below!

Okay first things first the relationships in this book had me IN. MY. FEELINGS. Emma and Julian have been doomed from the start. As soon as they were like Julian has a secret room that no one can go into I knew  it was just filled with paintings of Emma. The way Cassie writes about love has me feeling all types of ways. And then when Jem told Emma about the parabatai law and how they would become too powerful and eventually end up killing each other I was  HEARTBROKEN. Can we talk about how that last chapter ended my life. Fucking Emma and Julian are meant to be and when Mark fucking closed that door I cringed and just started internally screaming. It is all about Emma and Julian the perfect looking and tan California couple that fuck on the beach!
also KIT. HERONDALE. Honey you is a shadowhunter. And knowing his bloodline he is going to be a damn good one. Once he gets out of that room that he locked himself into. I knew he would be of importance when we first read of him in the prologue and his dad said to stay away from shadowhunters so I had my suspicions then but I did not know he was going to be a WHOLE ASS HERONDALE! I did not know he was going to be the missing shadowhunter that they were talking about in the Shadow Hunter Academy books.

Also fucking Malcom. That scum. I did not expect him to be involved. I thought we could trust the warlocks. Magnus gave us false hope. Not all of them are good and the fact that he killed Emma's parents too... for fun? Oh hell nah. But I found that whole climax to be not very thrilling. It did not feel like a real betrayal or a true villain. Not the hatred that I had for Valentine and Sebastian Morgenstern. But I am sure we will be getting some real scary villains in these next two books.

Emma is by far my favorite protagonist. She has Jace's swagger and feistiness and is no where near as annoying as Clary was. I cannot wait to keep reading and see what Cassandra Clare has in store for us next!

Who is your favorite Blackthorn child? Let me know in the comments down below!

  4. I like the dievrse cast, too, and not only in terms of race or sexual orientation... it's because they're all intelligent, brave, etc but in different ways! there's a LOT of characters and they're all very distinct (but you can still tell which ones are related, too!).
Just think about how different Emma, Cristina and Dru are, for example. It's great :)
