There is nothing that I love more than a forbidden romance, but nothing has me breathlessly turning pages quite like a significant age difference. While a story like this might make certain people pause, I relish it. And I especially love when a book is so well-written that the love story eventually eclipses the forbidden quality of it. Penelope Douglas manages to perfectly capture the mounting attraction between Jordan and Pike while never allowing it to overshadow their growing emotional attachment. This love story just flourishes and unfolds before our eyes. We feel them fall in love and watch their struggle not succumb to desires. I simply adored the way the romance unraveled between Jordan and Pike. It was so real and raw, never torrid even though it was forbidden. You understand their attraction. You believe in it. The tantalizingly slow build makes it even better.

This book got extremely steamy. It was raw and sexy and unique. The sex scenes in this book were well written, but not kinky. At least not for me but I know everyone is different. There was a ton of built up tension which I LOVEEE. Something about an older man taking charge is such a turn on. But everything was consensual which I appreciate so much. A lot of times when you see a book with such an age difference, the consent is thrown out the window which is an automatic no from me. I do not care if it ruins the flow of the writing. It ruins the mood for me. 

Birthday Girl is a forbidden romance, but it is also so much more than that. It is a story of strength and forgiveness. I also listened to the audiobook and listening to a man with such a deep and sultry voice describe these sex scenes was just the cherry on top. 5 out of 5 stars!
