After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.
Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

I first noticed
Throne of Glass when the new cover change came in almost two years ago. It was beautiful and I knew that I was going to go out of my way trying to find the new paperback beauty that is Throne of Glass! The covers for every single one of these books in the series is beautiful and I just want to display them all on my shelves (currently I have
Crown of Midnight on display for it is one of my favorites).
Throne of Glass is the perfect blend of taking a story that is familiar to most of us and adding an exciting new twist.
I love high fantasy novels and the worlds they create so much so that I become infatuated with every single detail. I need to know the history and what this land looked like. Luckily most of these high fantasy books do come with a map in the front and what I usually do is photo copy it so then I do not have to struggle flipping through the book trying to find the map and eventually losing my page.

This book had me enthralled from start to finish! I grew a quick love for Celaena, Dorian and Chaol and refused to put the book down until I knew what would happen in the end. This book is very similar to The Hunger Games in the sense that all these assassins are competing against one another, but there is the under-lying story of this murder mystery that we follow that gives this book a little more depth. The competition to determine who would be the King's champion is fine, but now entirely original. The addition of the murder mystery cemented the suspense and introduced the magical element that I found most appealing.
The one bone I do have to pick with this book is the love triangles! i hate love triangles and they are the epitome of my downfall. Love triangles kill me in every sense of the word and I was so bummed out when I found out that this book had one, however I did not mind it in this case. Yes it is frustrating to see Celaena share moments with Chaol when I am Team Dorian (forever and always), but I have learned to deal with it be content with this love triangle. Celaena's interactions with both of them were pleasant and I enjoyed reading both of their parts.

Celaena is one of my favorite female protagonist in YA ever. She is so bad ass and terrifying but yet has two boys falling for her. It was refreshing to see someone go from kick ass assassin to showing everyone up at a ball. She is a trained assassin with a mission and a mind of her own. The only fault I had with Celaena was her lack of awareness. Surely an assassin would not eat candy given to her anonymously, especially if the other competitors are trying to kill one another off.
Other than that very minor detail, I loved this book. I have already read Crown of Midnight and Heir of Fire which are both fantastic. If you are skeptical of picking up this series, it is an amazing intro into the fantasy world of castles, kings and assassins. The plot was not overwhelming and confusing like most are and the world building was simple and not to complex where a reader could get lost easily.
All in all I really enjoyed Throne of Glass! 5 out of 5 stars
