Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl.

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

Cinder is another book that has been sitting on my shelf for ages and I had never come around to it, but with all the hype surrounding Winter (the last book in the Lunar Chronicles series) I knew I had to jump onto the bandwagon before it was too late. Although I do love a good fairytale retelling, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical going in. I am not a huge fan of space and futuristic robot type things...it's just not my style, but I have to say I did love this book.
The story takes place in New Beijng in the distant future where humans and androids coexist. We follow a girl by the name of Linh Cinder who is considered a second-class citizen because she is a cyborg. At the age of eleven she was in a terrible hovercraft accident and survived because of her new metal parts (a hand and a foot). Furthermore, we have gone so far into the future that people are living on the moon, Lunars, and they have created and evolved into a life of their own. They have become so technologically advanced that they have become a serious threat to the people of Earth.
In recent years there has been an outbreak of an extremely deadly plague on Earth. It has affected and infected everyone from Cinder's sister to the Emperor of the Eastern Commonwealth. Since the Emperor has fallen sick, the young and charming Prince Kai has to take on the duties of his father in order to save the people of the world from the Lunars.

It did not take me much time to get into the world that Marissa Meyer created. I jumped right in a flew through the book. I read maybe 250 pages in one sitting which is quite difficult for me because always get distracted while reading, but not with this book. Cinder kept me engaged the entire time, whether it be Cinder talking about how all these futuristic mechanisms work to Prince Kai talking about politics, I was completely invested. Though the outcome was predictable, (if you missed it there might be something wrong with you because it was so obvious) it did not take away from my reading experience.
I did like how Cinder followed the basic storyline of Cinderella, but yet was nothing like it. Of course we have the evil step-mother, the charming prince and the ball, but there was so much more than that. Cinderella acted as a skeleton while Cinder was the whole person. With the addition of the plague and evil Queen Levana, the story grew color and depth.
At first I did not find Cinder's step-mother to be all that terrible, she was still bad but I did not think she was as bad as Cinderella's step-mother. SPOILER It was not until Peony died that I saw the true side of Adri and Pearl. The scene with Pearl and the gloves made my heartbreak. I did not know people could be so evil. SPOILER I just saw the mother as unjust and unruly. Iko is one of my favorite characters. She had so much personality and added a nice humorous tone in every scene that she was in. I additionally loved Dr. Erland. He was like a father figure to Cinder, which is what she needed in such a stressful time, a person to rely on. She knew that she could always turn to him.
Overall I really did enjoy this book. After reading 50 pages I had to order the other books from Amazon because Cinder was so good. Marissa Meyer turned the story of Cinderella into something interesting again. It was no longer the story that has been told a million times. It was something new and exciting! I cannot wait to read Scarlet! My package better arrive quick! 5 out of 5 stars.

  1. It was the same thing for me with Cinder! It had been on my TBR forever, and then all the Winter hype got to me, and I decided to finally read it and I am so glad I did. Winter is my favorite season, so there are so many things I love about it. The cold, the snow, spending time with family inside eating cookies, drinking hot chocolate, listening to Christmas music. I also get a lot of reading done this time of the year, so that is definitely a plus.

I just love everything about Winter really.

  2. The cold weather is my favorite thing about Winter. Gives me more reasons to keep buying chocolate creamer for my coffee. Plus, there's a chance of getting a snow day, or at the very least, a freezing day day here in AL. That means more staying home and reading for me, or binge watching my favorite shows.

  10. winter is my favorite season because of the snow. it covers all the dirt and concrete and dull colors of the world and paints it into full whiteness like you've stepped into another planet or world- just like what a book does.
