Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.
And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.
Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands", she speaks many languages - not all of them human - and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.
When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

This book is very high fantasy as you can tell from the description above. There are a lot of names and terms to remember along with seeing from different character’s point of view, but it all comes together so beautifully in the end. Laini Taylor has an amazing way of using words. Each line of this book was written wonderfully and there where lines were I just sat in awe and reread it over and over. She can turn a simple sentence into a paragraph of pure beauty. For example when describing how Karou could not raise just one eyebrow she says, “Her own eyebrows did not function independently of each other, which handicapped her expressions of suspicion and disdain." What a wonderful way of saying that she could not move one eyebrow.
It is difficult to give a plot description of this book because Daughter of Smoke and Bone's main storyline contains a heavy mystery that is slowly revealed to the Karou alongside the reader. Since I see it as detrimental to the any reader to have this book spoiled for them, I will do my best to refrain from revealing those revelations.
One thing that surprised me about this book was how drastically different it was from beginning to end. When the book first opens, the world seems mundane but towards the end we are introduced to the world of the Seraphim and the Chimera and the battle among them. This story of love and war made my heart sing and put this book on the top of my list.
Karou is a very likable character as well. Many main characters are often times irritating and you always end up questioning why they are making the decisions they make. Karou on the other hand is so loyal to her adopted family even if they keep her in the dark in many situations. She can fight her own battles and stick up for herself yet she is not afraid of showing her more vulnerable side especially to Akiva. Akiva...that boy. Let me tell you I need an Akiva in my life. The description of impossible beauty just makes my body melt. But my favorite character has to be Zuzana. She was so funny and gave me the most laughs out of anyone in the book. She was always straight forward and not afraid of what anyone thought of her.
The setting also intrigued me. Not many books are set in Prague. You always see London, New York and Paris but never Czech Republic. It was a twist and with Taylor's writing being so descriptive it brought the city to life before my eyes.
This book has become one of my all time favorite books next to the Mortal Instruments book and Harry Potter. From the characters I fell in love with to the descriptions that were so exquisite Taylor did an amazing job with this book. 5 out of 5 stars! I have already started Days of Blood and Starlight and I am in love!
